Need help with my daughter's fever!?
My daughter just turned 3 weeks old last friday. Since saturday afternoon she has been running a fever. It’s been going up and down and at one point it got up to 102.5. We brought her up to the ER saturday night because she is so young and we were worried. The ER doctor took her temp and it was 101.8. He then told us to keep giving her tylenol and not to bring her back unless her temp was at 105!! I’ve been told by numerous people that brain damage and seizures can occur once the fever reaches 103 (which my daughter was very close to) Has anyone else gotten the advice to not bring their child in until it reaches 105, or is that doctor absolutely crazy??
sorry meant to say 3 MONTHS not 3 weeks.
105?? Really? That doctor is an idiot. Since she’s so young you need to keep an eye on it and if it starts getting to 101+ then that’s when you need to do something about it. For babies OVER 6 months it’s 103+. Younger infants cannot handle high temperatures such as that.
There are times where it’s better to listen to your motherly instinct and ignore a doctor’s recommendations.

Yea that’s not right fyi ER docs suck. I would definatly call your doctor or go to different hospital if it gets to 102 again.

It sounds to me like the doctor is either overworked, lazy or both. 105 is extremely high, especially for a baby. I would bring your baby back into the ER (or another ER if possible) and have your child looked at again. This is YOUR baby, no one cares for it as much as you. I would also suggest you get your baby into her regular doctor as soon as possible.
"For a baby between 3 and 6 months old, call if his temperature reaches 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C) or higher."

105 is way to high for a 3 month to wait around for. My doctor told me that for a baby 101. is even pretty high. I think you need to take her to a pediatrician very soon don’t wait for her to get a 105 fever that is not good at all. I can not believe the er told you that.

The ER doctor is trained to deal with emergencies (a high fever = bring the fever down). They are not trained and don’t have experience in diagnosing and curing the cause of the high fever. Today is not a holiday, its not a weekend and its not in the middle of the night; you need to bring your daughter in to her pediatrician today so he/she can advise you.
In general stay away from the ER. They are great at dealing with the emergency at hand but your daughter’s pediatrician is better trained to give medical advice.

Now that she’s beyond the 2 month mark the dr. was right. I think.

Brain damage does not occur from a temperature until the body reaches above 107.
